What is overbooking?

  • Overbooking happens when the airline sells more tickets than available seats for a journey
  • This happens because not everyone who buys a ticket uses it and the airline loses the revenue from empty seats.

How to calculate the compansation for overbooking?

  • It depends on the distance of the flight.
  • If the distance is less than 1,500 km, the compensation will be 250€ per passenger.
  • If the distance is between 1,500 km and 3,500 km, the compensation will be 400€ per passenger.
  • If the distance is more than 3,500 km, the compensation will be 600€ per passenger.

What types of overbooking exist?

  • There are two cases of overbooking.
  • Voluntary denied boarding – in this case the airline will offer you alternative transport, refund for the ticket, vouchers, upgrades, etc. 
  • Involuntary denied boarding – if no passengers willingly give up their seat, the airline is forced to bump some of them to a later flight. In this case the airline will offer you compansation, refund for the ticket and alternative transport.
